In addition, managing the environmental and social impacts is paramount in all stages of Alupar’s energy generation process, ensuring the community’s economic and social development.

Economic growth and energy availability walk together. Consequently, the construction of hydropower plants and transmission lines are beneficial and essential to Brazil’s development. The gains from implementing such projects outweigh their potential negative impacts. Some of these benefits are low cost for energy generation, obtaining energy from a renewable sustainable source and developing programs that are important to preserve the environment in the region, creating new jobs and strengthening the local economy.

Aligned with its commitment to the sustainable development of the communities where it operates, all Alupar projects are in compliance with the environmental laws based on the instruments and rites of the process of environmental licensing, and follow the resolutions of the National Environment Council (CONAMA). Each project has unique characteristics that are respected and taken into account during the Environmental Impact Study (EIA), so as to establish the most effective plan of action for each location.

These initiatives that aim to mitigate each project’ impacts are described in detail in the Basic Environmental Plan (PBA).

Carbon Credits

Another initiative that contributes to the sustainability of Alupar’s energy generation projects is the certification to generate carbon credits which are traded on the international market. Created by the United Nations (UN), this practice is part of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and highlights the contribution of the projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and control global warming.

Respect for the past history and opinion of the local communities is essential during each stage of implementation and operation of a project. For this reason, Alupar maintains an open communication channel through Social Communication Programs which are essential to information exchange between the Company and the community, so that everyone is aware of the most important events related to Alupar’s projects, ensuring transparency in any news of public interest.

The project must be beneficial to all parties involved—based on this premise and the specific needs of each region, Alupar invests in programs to actively help improve quality of life in the local communities. Besides developing projects geared towards key topics, such as health and education.

Through tax incentive laws, the community also benefits from cultural programs, including travelling theatre and maintenance of community libraries and multi-purpose sports centers.

Diversity and Inclusion Program

Alupar has a Diversity and Inclusion Program called Alento, which is based on principles of cognitive empathy, active listening, education, engagement, ethics, and social effectiveness. Some of the actions are highlighted below:

• Hiring of specialized consultancy in Diversity and Inclusion;
• Conducting literacy sessions on Diversity topics with our employees;
• Internal actions on Diversity awareness dates;
• Establishment of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

A good relationship with the community in the region where a new Alupar project will be implemented also depends on respect for its past history. Before starting the works, an archeological team studies the records and documents related to the region’s ancestors. After this preliminary study, the team goes to the field with the appropriate tools and thoroughly searches the project’s area of influence.

Green Bonds are bonds issued to raise funds for projects or assets that have a positive socio-environmental impact. These bonds, which are generally long-term, attract investors committed to the development and improvement of climate issues. In December 2019, TSM – Transmissora Serra da Mantiqueira S.A., a subsidiary of Alupar, issued a green bond to finance the construction of the asset. This issuance is considered green, based on satisfactory socio-environmental performance, assessed by an independent expert opinion, and considering its contribution to the transmission of renewable energy.

In December 2021, Alupar joined the United Nations’ Global Compact (UN), nationally known as the “Rede Brasil do Pacto Global da ONU”. As a member, the Company declares to support the Ten Universal Principles, derived from The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The International Labour Organization Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development and The United Nations Convention against Corruption.

Human Rights

• Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
• Make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labour

• Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
• The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.
• The effective abolition of child labour.
• The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Environment

• Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.
• Undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility.
• Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.

Anti-Corruption

• Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
